- Affidavit on a standard SASSA form (if you don’t have an ID), completed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official, along with a sworn statement signed by a well-known person. SASSA will take your fingerprint and refer you to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for an ID. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of your application.
- ID document of your spouse (if married)
- Proof of marital status, such as a sworn statement or affidavit, divorce-proof or order, marriage certificate, or spouse’s death certificate
- Residential proof
- Proof of income (including your spouse’s income if married)
- Assets proof, including proof of any property you own (including your spouse’s assets if married)
- Dependent child proof of income (if applicable)
- Proof of private pension (if applicable)
- 3-month bank statement
- Proof of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or discharge certificate from your previous employer
- Death certificate copy, the deceased’s will, and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts (if applicable, and the death occurred within the last five years)
It’s important to note that failure to provide any of these required documents may result in the rejection of your pension grant application.
There are various methods available to receive your payment:

- You can also receive your payment through a bank or Postbank account, but please note that the bank may charge you for this service.
- In some cases, you can receive your payment directly at the institution you are residing in, such as an old age home.
It is also possible to appoint a person to collect your payment on your behalf if you are unable to do so. Causes for Grant Suspension

Note: The grant may be reinstated if the application is submitted within 90 days of suspension.
Grant Lapsing Rules
If you pass away, leave the country, or are absent from the Republic, your grant will lapse. Additionally, if you are admitted to any state institution, such as a prison, rehabilitation center, or old age home, your grant will be affected. While you are in an institution, the grant will be reduced to 25% due to the institution’s contract with the government to take care of people. The reduction in the grant will continue until you are discharged from the institution. The grant will start lapsing from the fourth month following your admission to the institution.
Sassa Pension Increase 2023
During his 2022 Budget Speech, Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana announced an increase in the Sassa grant for 2023 that will be higher than the inflation rate. Over 48% of people in South Africa receive financial assistance from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). After reviewing the National Treasury, the 2022 Budget explains that in the coming days, the number of beneficiaries will increase by about 1.5%.
This means that the number of beneficiaries for grants will increase from 18.4 million in 2021/2022 to 19.2 million in 2024/25. This figure does not include the 10.5 million beneficiaries of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant.
Old-Age Grant for Beneficiaries under 75
The old-age grant for beneficiaries under 75 years old will increase from R1,890 to R1,985 in April, and then to R1,990 in October, indicating a 5.3% increase compared to the original amount.
Old-Age Grant for Beneficiaries over 75:
The old-age grant for pensioners over the age of 75 will increase from R1,910 to R2,005 in April, and then to R2,010 in October, representing a 5.2% increase.
How to Apply for Sassa Old Age Pension
Unfortunately, you cannot Apply for an Old Age Pension online for the old age grant. The Sassa old age pension application form is not available online, but you can get it from any Sassa office.
Sassa’s Old-Age Pension Amount in 2023
If you are 75 years or older, the Sassa will pay a maximum average amount of R1,780 per month. However, the grant amount may change every year during the national budget speech.
