Department Declares 28 April A Special School Holiday

Students and instructors in South Africa have good news! Informing parents, guardians, and the local school community about the upcoming special holiday on April 28, 2023 is the Department of Basic Education.

It has been decided that Friday, April 28, 2023, will be a special school holiday. Students and teachers are not expected to report to class on that day. Parents and guardians were reminded by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) that they were not required to take their children to school.

Freedom Day, which falls on Thursday, April 27, 2023, is a significant national holiday that honors the first post-apartheid elections that took place on that date in 1994, 29 years ago.

Following Freedom Day on Friday, April 28, 2023, students and teachers will have a special school holiday, according to an agreement reached by the Department and concerned parties.

The DBE also reminded South Africans that Monday, May 1, 2023, is a public holiday as well, so students and instructors are not expected to be at school on that day. Workers’ Day is observed on this day to honor the contribution that trade unions and other groups made to obtaining universally equitable work standards.

“The Department of Basic Education therefore promotes teaching and involving students in learning about our wonderful country’s history from as early an age as is practical.”

While looking toward a better and brighter future, it is crucial to remember the significance of these historical celebrations for South Africa.

As a result, there will be a long weekend for schools starting on Thursday, April 27, 2023, and ending on Monday, May 1, 2023.
